How loud should ad-libs and backing vocals be under the lead?
Backgrounds sit around 8–14 dB under the lead, ad-libs around 6–10 dB for answer-style lines and 3–6 dB for hype ad-libs meant to hit. Set all of it with faders and the beat playing, before a single plugin goes on.
The practical method: pull the whole backgrounds stack down to silence, then bring it up until the chorus suddenly feels bigger — and stop there, at the point where you notice thesize rather than the individual singers. If you can pick out a specific harmony line, it is 2–3 dB too loud. Backgrounds work like reverb: you are supposed to miss them when they are muted, not point at them when they are up.
Ad-libs are the opposite — they are meant to be noticed, just never at the expense of the lead. Ride them per phrase with volume automation (press A) rather than setting one static level. A hype ad-lib under a shouted chorus needs to be a lot louder than the same sample sitting under a soft verse line, and one fader position cannot serve both.
How do I pan backing vocals and ad-libs in Logic Pro?
Hard-pan backgrounds in pairs — two takes of the same harmony, one at 100% left and one at 100% right. Real separate performances panned wide is the only width that survives mono. Keep ad-libs closer in, usually 30–60% out, so they stay connected to the voice they belong to.

For ad-libs, panning is a storytelling tool. Alternate sides across the verse so consecutive ad-libs land in different places, and keep the ones that answer the lead line directly closer to centre. How should I EQ and compress backing vocals so they don’t fight the lead?
Take away more than you think. On the backgrounds bus, high-pass with Channel EQ at 150–250 Hz, shelve down 2–4 dB above 8 kHz, and compress harder than the lead — 4:1 ratio, 6–8 dB of gain reduction.
That high-pass is aggressive on purpose. Six voices each carrying their own chest resonance at 200 Hz stacks into a wall of mud, and none of that low end is doing any work — the lead already owns the body of the voice. Same logic on top: the lead gets the air, the backgrounds get the shelf pulled down, and suddenly the two stop competing for the same space.
For compression, use Studio VCA with attack around 5–10 ms and release 60–100 ms. Backgrounds should be flat and consistent — dynamic range is a feature of the lead, not of a harmony pad. How do I make ad-libs duck out of the way of the lead vocal?
Sidechain them. Put a Compressor on the ad-lib bus, set its Side Chain input to the lead vocal bus, ratio 2:1–3:1, attack 5 ms, release 150–250 ms, and set the threshold for 2–3 dB of gain reduction when the lead is singing.
Now the ad-libs step back automatically whenever the lead is on a word, and jump forward in the gaps — exactly what a mixer does by hand, without the hour of automation. Keep the reduction small; at 6 dB you can hear the pumping and it starts to sound like a broken radio edit. If the release is too fast you will hear the ad-libs breathing back in between syllables, so lengthen it until the movement disappears.

Set ChromaVerb on a bus at 100% wet, decay 1.0–1.4 s, pre-delay 20–40 ms, with a Channel EQ after it high-passing the return around 300–400 Hz.
