Ratio 3:1 to 4:1, attack around 10–20 ms so consonants still punch through, release 40–80 ms or Auto, threshold set for 4–6 dB of gain reduction on the loud lines. If your needle is pinned at 12 dB down, you are using the compressor to do a job that automation should have done first.
DeEsser 2 after compression, not before — compression is what makes “s” sounds spiky in the first place. Set Detection to the sibilant range (roughly 5–9 kHz), and reduce only until the harshness stops, so the singer does not develop a lisp. How do I make my vocal sit at a consistent level in Logic Pro?
Do it before the compressor, by hand. Balance the loud and quiet phrases with clip gain and volume automation, and let the compressor handle only the fine detail. This single habit is the biggest audible difference between a home mix and a commercial one, and it costs nothing.
Start with clip gain: hover over the top of a region in the Tracks area and drag the gain handle, or slice a section with the Scissors and pull that piece down. Then ride the fader. Press A to show automation, choose Volume, and draw small moves under the sections that still duck under the beat. How do professionals add depth without washing the vocal out?
With sends, pre-delay and short decay — never with reverb inserted directly on the vocal. Send a small amount to one reverb and one delay, keep the reverb short, and use pre-delay so the front of each word stays dry and up front.
Create a bus, put ChromaVerb on it, and start from a small plate or chamber room type.
